594 Bitcoin Vanish From Coldcard Wallets Overnight
Someone swept 594 bitcoin, worth roughly $38 million, out of about 500 Coldcard wallets between 01:31 and 01:56 UTC on Thursday. The cause was a five-year-old firmware bug that made supposedly random wallet seeds guessable.
Coldcard maker Coinkite says the problem traces to firmware version 4.0.1, shipped in March 2021, and warns anyone who generated a seed on an Mk3 since then to move their funds. Block's bitcoin engineering team, which root-caused the bug independently, goes further, saying current Mk4, Q and Mk5 devices are also weakened. Coinkite says βthe impact on Mk4, Mk5 and Q is not as severe but is still serious.βΒ
Every drained wallet was single-signature and held more than 0.15 BTC, and many had been dormant for years.Β
Coinbase's Losing Streak Hits Three Quarters
Coinbase reported $1.22 billion in second-quarter revenue on Thursday, down 14% from Q1 and short of the $1.29 billion analysts expected. The $359 million net loss makes three consecutive quarters in the red.Β
Spot trading volume dropped more than 20% quarter over quarter as volatility hit multi-year lows, pulling transaction revenue to $599 million. Subscription and services revenue came in at $555 million, below the company's own $565 million to $645 million guidance, after some USDC commercial deals closed late and lower prices dented staking revenue.
On the flipside: crypto trading market share hit a record 10.3%, prediction markets revenue grew 106% sequentially past a $100 million annualized run rate, and average USDC held on the platform reached $20 billion.
Fake IRS Letters Are Hunting Crypto Holders
The IRS Criminal Investigation division issued a fraud alert Thursday warning that scammers are mailing counterfeit IRS letters to crypto holders, telling them to enroll in a "Digital Asset Compliance Portal." No such portal exists.
The letters arrive in plain envelopes, imitate Treasury formatting, cite tax years from 2017 through 2026 and carry a QR code pointing to a look-alike IRS site, according to a Tuesday Coinbase blog post offering more details. The site collects which exchange you use, roughly how much you hold and your phone number, and then a fake support representative calls to talk you out of a seed phrase or a two-factor code.
"Criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies," said IRS-CI Chief Jarod Koopman.

π Strategy booked an $8.22 billion net loss for the second quarter, or $24.45 per diluted share, driven almost entirely by an $8.32 billion unrealized markdown on its bitcoin. The company held 843,775 BTC as of July 26 at an average cost of $75,476, and has sold $218.4 million of bitcoin year to date to help fund preferred dividends.Β
